In December 2003, Sony released the PSX, a device that blended gaming and home entertainment in a way that had never been seen before. It wasn’t just another gaming console; it was a hybrid that could record TV shows, burn DVDs, connect to the internet, and play PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games. The PSX was part of Sony's experiment to combine multimedia capabilities into one device, testing the waters for what might come next in the evolving entertainment landscape.
The device was unveiled by Ken Kutaragi during Sony's fiscal management briefing on May 28, 2003, and later showcased at CEATEC JAPAN 2003. With its minimalist design and powerful capabilities, the PSX initially drew a lot of attention. However, despite early interest and solid initial sales, it struggled to find a broader audience. Eventually, it became a Japan-exclusive product, marking a curious chapter in Sony's history of experimentation.
