How the Walkman Phone Went Mainstream
The Sony Ericsson W550i
When the W800 arrived in 2005 it reset expectations for what a mobile phone could be. Sony Ericsson took the proven K750 platform, added the Walkman brand, and delivered a music experience that felt complete rather than bolted on. A dedicated player, and a camera that could stand beside compact digital shooters made the W800 feel like a genuine convergence device. It was the first phone that made people consider leaving their iPod or digital camera at home.
But the W800 was a premium device and it carried a price that kept it out of reach for many users. Sony understood a single flagship could prove the idea, but it could not define the category on its own. If the Walkman phone was going to become part of everyday culture it needed a model that was more accessible. The W550i became that step.
