2000

PlayStation 2 SCPH-10000 (Japan)

The SCPH-10000 marked the commercial launch of the PlayStation 2, released in Japan on March 4, 2000. Bundled with an 8MB memory card, it introduced DVD playback and sixth-generation gaming as a unified home-entertainment platform. As a first-run system, it reflected early hardware and firmware maturity, prompting Sony to revise the design rapidly. This model remained exclusive to Japan and was never sold in other regions.

PlayStation 2 SCPH-15000 (Japan)

Serving as a transitional revision, the SCPH-15000 was released in Japan in June 2000. Externally identical to the SCPH-10000 and still bundled with an 8MB memory card, it incorporated minor internal refinements aimed at improving manufacturing stability and reliability. No functional or performance changes were introduced, and the model remained Japan-exclusive.

PlayStation 2 SCPH-30001 (North America)

The PlayStation 2 made its North American debut on October 26, 2000 with the SCPH-30001 (often labeled SCPH-30001R in later production), marking the system’s first release outside Japan.

PlayStation 2 SCPH-18000 (Japan)

The SCPH-18000 reflected Sony’s evolving positioning of the PlayStation 2 as both a game console and a DVD player, reaching Japan on December 7, 2000. This revision altered the standard bundle by removing the memory card and including a DVD Remote Control and IR Receiver, emphasizing movie playback at a time when standalone DVD players remained expensive. Hardware changes were minimal, and functionality remained consistent with earlier models. It was the final Japan-only PS2 revision before globally aligned hardware followed.

2001

PlayStation 2 SCPH-30000

The SCPH-30000 eliminated bundled DVD accessories entirely and was released in Japan in April 2001. Early units were locked to NTSC-J software, and gradual price reductions helped accelerate adoption in Japan. Although North America had already launched with the SCPH-30001 in late 2000, Japan remained on the SCPH-18000 through the end of that year, making the SCPH-30000 Japan’s first transition to the globally standardized hardware line.

PlayStation 2 SCPH-35000GT

A minor internal refinement of the SCPH-30000 architecture, the SCPH-35000 launched in June 2001. In Japan, the revision is formally documented through the GT3 Racing Pack (SCPH-35000GT), which served as its primary launch vehicle. The same hardware later appeared internationally as SCPH-35001 in North America and SCPH-35004 in Europe, with regional differences limited to packaging and bundled software.

2002

PlayStation 2 Automotive Edition SCPH-30000RSW Snow White

Snow White was produced exclusively for the Automotive Edition campaign and should not be confused with later retail Ceramic White releases. Like the other Automotive Edition variants, it circulated through promotional channels in Japan, with corresponding regional versions issued outside the country.

PlayStation 2 Automotive Edition SCPH-30000RSR Super Red

Super Red expanded the Automotive Edition lineup with one of Sony’s boldest finishes of the era. Distributed as a prize console in Japan during 2002, it followed the same limited-production, non-retail pattern, with equivalent versions later appearing in North America and Europe.

PlayStation 2 Automotive Edition SCPH-30000RAB Astral Blue

Astral Blue completed the Automotive Edition color set introduced in Japan in 2002. In North America, the same finish was marketed under the name Star Blue, although the shell color and hardware remained identical. As with the other Automotive Edition consoles, distribution was limited to promotional campaigns rather than retail sales. Metallic Silver formed part of the same Automotive Edition lineup and followed the identical prize-only distribution model. Produced in similarly limited quantities, it originated in Japan before appearing in North America and Europe with regional model numbering.

PlayStation 2 SCPH-37000 Ocean Blue (Japan)

The Ocean Blue PlayStation 2 was one of the first special color variants offered on SCPH-37000 hardware, released in Japan on July 18, 2002. Announced as part of Sony Computer Entertainment Japan’s limited 2002 Color Series, it featured a blue-tinted translucent shell that revealed the console’s internal structure. PlayStation 2 SCPH-37000 Zen Black (Japan)

Zen Black followed Ocean Blue as the darker companion in Sony’s limited 2002 Color Series, released to the Japanese market on August 1, 2002. Built on the same SCPH-37000 hardware, it used a smoke-tinted translucent finish that offered a subtler aesthetic. PlayStation 2 SCPH-39000

The SCPH-39000 represented a reliability-focused refinement of the original PS2 hardware and was released in November 2002. A Toys “R” Us–branded limited edition based on SCPH-39000 hardware, the Toys “R” Us Blue console appeared in Japan in December 2002. PlayStation 2 50 Million Units Edition SCPH-39000S Metallic Silver (Japan)

PlayStation 2 50 Million Units Edition SCPH-39000AQ Aqua Blue

Created to mark the PlayStation 2 surpassing 50 million units shipped worldwide, the Aqua Blue edition reached the Japanese market on February 20, 2003. PlayStation 2 SCPH-50000

The SCPH-50000 became the final and most refined iteration of the original “fat” PlayStation 2 design, launching in May 2003. PlayStation 2 SCPH-50000MB Midnight Blue (BB Unit) (Japan)

Sometimes shown as MB / NH in listings, Midnight Blue was issued as a PlayStation BB Unit bundle based on SCPH-50000 hardware, released in Japan on June 12, 2003. The console featured a dark blue shell and was sold exclusively as part of a broadband package that included a Network Adapter, an external 40GB HDD, matching accessories, and BB Navigator software, and it was never offered as a standalone retail console. PlayStation 2 SCPH-50000NB Midnight Black (Japan)

PlayStation 2 SCPH-50000SS Satin Silver

Satin Silver emerged during the later fat PS2 era as a standard retail color across multiple regions. PlayStation 2 Slim SCPH-75000 Charcoal Black

The SCPH-75000 series represented a minor refinement of the original Slimline design and was released in Japan on June 16, 2005. PlayStation 2 SCPH-75000FF Slim Final Fantasy XII Limited Edition

By relocating the power supply to an external adapter, Sony reduced internal components to the bare minimum, resulting in the smallest and lightest PS2 hardware revision produced. PlayStation 2 Slim SCPH-90000CB Charcoal Black

Ceramic White returned alongside the final hardware revision and was released in Japan on November 22, 2007. Built on the SCPH-90000 platform, this version paired the minimalist white finish with the reintroduced internal power supply and refined thermal design of the last Slimline generation.

PlayStation 2 SCPH-90000SS Slim Satin Silver

Satin Silver accompanied the final Slimline hardware revision in November 2007. While North America primarily received the finish late in the console’s lifecycle on the SCPH-90001 series, Satin Silver had already been available earlier in Japan and Europe on select Slimline revisions, including SCPH-75000 and SCPH-77000 models, where it served as a standard retail color option alongside Charcoal Black.

2008

PlayStation 2 SCPH-90000CR Slim Cinnabar Red

Cinnabar Red marked the final PlayStation 2 hardware release in Japan, arriving on July 3, 2008. Built on the SCPH-90000 Slimline platform, the deep red finish closed out the PS2’s nearly decade-long production run and stands as the last newly introduced PlayStation 2 console worldwide.

These systems are official Sony products that incorporate PlayStation 2 hardware, but were released outside the PlayStation console roadmap and are therefore documented separately from the main PS2 lifecycle.

PSX (DESR Series, Japan)

The PSX line integrated PlayStation and PlayStation 2 hardware into a digital video recorder platform sold exclusively in Japan, beginning in December 2003. Designed as a high-end living-room media hub, the system combined game playback, DVD recording, and digital broadcasting features into a single chassis.

Sony BRAVIA KDL-22PX300

Sony explored hardware convergence with the BRAVIA KDL-22PX300, a 22-inch HD-ready television introduced in Europe in 2010 that incorporates a PlayStation 2 console. The display supports gameplay without a separate PS2 unit and includes four HDMI ports alongside BRAVIA Internet Video features, positioning it as one of Sony’s most unusual late-generation integrations of legacy console hardware.

Sony would later take a similar approach at launch with the PlayStation 3, which initially retained PlayStation 2 hardware on the motherboard before transitioning away from it.
