Akira Tanaka, who spent years designing Walkman at Sony, says it would be much closer to starting over.

Tanaka is a former Sony mechanical engineer whose published project list spans four types of Walkman: five cassette models, eight CD models, two MiniDisc models, and ten generations of file-based players. He was project manager for the camera-equipped MZ-DH10P and the MZ-RH1, Sony’s final Hi-MD Walkman. He later served as mechanical engineering manager for several digital Walkman generations, including the A820 and X1000 series.

He remained at Sony until taking early retirement in February 2025. Today, he owns more than 70 Walkman products and 279 catalogs, and he writes about the machines he helped create almost every day.

Tanaka is probably my favorite person to follow online. I eagerly wait for anything he has to say about Walkman history because nobody else has his combination of firsthand experience, technical knowledge, and personal archive. He has answered my questions, looked at my work, and helped me with the Obsolete Sony archive. I think of him as my Walkman senpai, and I am still slightly amazed that I get to talk with someone who helped make the products I spend so much time documenting.

In a recent post, Tanaka gave six reasons Sony would have difficulty reissuing its cassette, CD, or MiniDisc Walkman models. His explanation reveals how much of the world that produced the Walkman has disappeared.

1. The Parts No Longer Exist

The miniature motors, magnetic heads, optical pickups, and proprietary integrated circuits used by these players have gone out of production. Sony cannot pull an old bill of materials from its files and order everything again. Suppliers moved on, production equipment was retired, and some companies may no longer be in those businesses. A working WM-EX2000 can make this difficult to believe, but any drawings still held by Sony describe components that nobody manufactures today.

Replacements could be designed, but nearly everything around them would need to change. A new cassette Walkman would need a transport, motor, head, control system, power supply, tooling, and housing built around components available now. A CD Walkman would need a new optical assembly and disc mechanism. A MiniDisc player would add a magnetic recording head, signal processing, and software. Sony can do all of this, but each format would require a new development program.

2. The Manufacturing Technology Has Been Lost

Later Walkman models were extremely small, thin, and precise. Sony reached those dimensions by designing each part around the others. Motors became flatter, circuit boards wrapped around moving assemblies, clearances almost disappeared, and the exterior casing sometimes became part of the structure.

That work depended on dedicated production lines and adjustment procedures. Drawings can record dimensions and tolerances, but they do not always record how a line was tuned after the first few thousand units, which jig solved an alignment problem, or which adjustment stopped a mechanism from wearing too quickly. Much of that knowledge stayed with the engineers and factory workers who used it.

This is why a new cassette player can be larger and mechanically worse than a Walkman sold more than 30 years ago. The factories making portable cassette mechanisms today are serving a small, inexpensive market. During the Walkman’s peak, shaving another millimeter from the body could justify a new motor and new tooling. That level of spending ended with the mass market.

3. The Economics Do Not Work

Plenty of people say they want a new cassette or MiniDisc Walkman, but the total market is still small. Collectors and physical-media fans are active online, which can make demand look larger than it is.

According to Tanaka, even sales in the tens of thousands might not recover the development and tooling costs. Low production volume would also raise the price of every specialized component. By the time Sony covered manufacturing, warranty service, and support, the player would be far more expensive than the simple reissue many fans have in mind.

4. MiniDisc Media Is Disappearing

CDs are still widely available, and cassettes continue to be manufactured in smaller quantities. MiniDisc is different. In January 2025, Sony announced that it would end production of all recordable MiniDisc media the following month, along with MD Data discs, MiniDV cassettes, and recordable Blu-ray media. Sony also said there would be no successor products.

A new MD Walkman would arrive after Sony stopped making blank discs for it. Used and unopened media will remain available for years, but the supply can only decline. Relaunching the hardware would make little sense unless Sony also restarted the media.

5. Development Resources Are Limited

Sony still develops Walkman. They are Android-based Hi-Res players built for local files and streaming, and that is where Tanaka believes the company can realistically concentrate its limited engineering staff and development budget. These players may have little in common with a cassette Walkman beyond the name and the fact that both play music through headphones. Sony chose to continue Walkman as a digital audio category and retire the cassette, CD, and MiniDisc mechanisms.

6. Tanaka Is No Longer at Sony

Tanaka makes his own departure the sixth reason. His joke points to another loss: Sony still has drawings, reports, patents, and test data, but it no longer has every engineer who remembers why a part was changed, which prototype failed, or how a production problem was fixed.

Some of that knowledge was passed to younger engineers, as Sony’s interview with Tanaka about the NW-X1000 shows. Once Sony stopped making mechanical Walkman models, however, there was no reason to keep passing along every detail of how to manufacture one.

Most of Tanaka’s six reasons are easy enough to guess. I still found it special to hear them from him. Sony has always been a company in motion. It launches the next thing and rarely explains why the old one can no longer be made. The Walkman moved from cassette to CD, MiniDisc, flash memory, and eventually Android, while the people, suppliers, tools, and knowledge behind each generation scattered.

Tanaka was close enough to this history to know what disappeared along the way. Sony will probably never publish a formal explanation of why those old Walkman models cannot come back. His post may be the closest answer we will ever get.

By the late 1990s, the original PlayStation had accumulated thousands of games and tens of millions of users. Sony was no longer entering the console business. It was responsible for an established platform, and starting over would mean abandoning one of its greatest advantages.

The new console needed to run those existing games while offering an obvious leap in performance. It also needed to play DVDs, and be affordable enough to manufacture by the millions. The project reflected the culture Ken Kutaragi had built around PlayStation, where performance targets were established before anyone knew exactly how they would be reached.

One of Sony’s most important decisions was to develop a custom graphics processor instead of relying on an outside supplier.

The resulting Graphics Synthesizer was built around extreme memory bandwidth. Its video memory sat beside the graphics circuitry in the same package and was connected through thousands of internal signal lines. Pixel data could move far more quickly than it could across a conventional external memory bus.

This gave the PS2 exceptional fill-rate performance. It could repeatedly redraw large areas of the screen using transparency, particles, motion blur, and layered effects. Games such as Gran Turismo 3, Metal Gear Solid 2, and Zone of the Enders used that strength to produce images far denser and more fluid than those of the previous generation.

But the Graphics Synthesizer had little video memory and was notoriously difficult to program. Developers could not approach it like a conventional PC graphics processor.

Performance created a more immediate problem: heat.

The original PlayStation 2 consumed close to 80 watts. Yasuhiro Otori, one of the engineers responsible for its mechanical design, later compared the challenge to putting a soldering iron inside the enclosure.

Only three engineers were responsible for the PS2’s mechanical design. Otori joined Sony in 1998, just as development of the console was beginning, and was soon working on its basic internal layout.

A larger heatsink required more room. Moving the power supply changed the airflow. Repositioning the disc drive affected the external shape.

Fans were still uncommon in home electronics, and some within the industry regarded them as evidence that a product had not been properly refined. Otori’s team was even asked to investigate ideas for a silent fan without conventional blades.

None of this reduced the amount of heat inside the machine. The production PS2 used a fan, heatsinks, and carefully directed airflow. Otori defended these choices with measurements and experimental data. The final layout was determined as much by temperature and air pressure as by the shape Sony wanted consumers to see.

Backward compatibility was not an expected console feature in the late 1990s. New generations normally arrived with new hardware and an empty software library.

Sony wanted the PS2 to run original PlayStation games, but the two systems used fundamentally different processors. Direct compatibility was impossible, while software emulation was not yet accurate or efficient enough to reproduce the older machine.

Teiji Yutaka, who had worked with Kutaragi on the original PlayStation, was given responsibility for solving the problem.

The answer reportedly came from an engineer working on the DVD drive: Sony could place the original PlayStation processor inside the PS2.

During normal PS2 operation, the older chip served as the input/output processor, handling controllers, audio, and other slower tasks. When an original PlayStation game was inserted, the same chip returned to something close to its original role.

The solution still required an enormous testing effort. Thousands of games had to be checked individually, with obscure failures investigated one at a time. Sony sometimes needed help from publishers without being able to explain fully why their software was being examined. Quality-assurance teams worked through almost the entire PlayStation library.

PS2 owners did not have to wait for the new console to accumulate enough games to justify buying it. Many already had a library on the day they brought it home.

DVD was spreading rapidly when the PS2 launched in 2000, but dedicated players were still expensive enough to be considered a major household purchase.

The PS2 offered DVD playback alongside a new game console and compatibility with original PlayStation software. In Japan, its ¥39,800 launch price placed it within reach of some of the more affordable DVD players then entering the market.

Even someone with little interest in games could understand the value of a DVD player. DVD playback made the PS2 easier to justify as a shared household purchase rather than simply another console beneath the television.

The film industry understood what the PS2 could do for the format. Millions of people would acquire a DVD player without going shopping specifically for one. Sony had used CD-ROM to make the original PlayStation possible. With the PS2, the relationship worked both ways. DVD helped sell the console, and the console helped move DVD into the living room.

The launch model was only the first version of the PlayStation 2. Sony continued reducing its size, cost, component count, and power consumption as manufacturing improved.

Internal components were consolidated. The cooling system changed. The large original model eventually became the compact PS2 Slim. A game made for an early PS2 still ran on a later one. Sony could keep rebuilding the hardware without dividing the platform.

This helped the PS2 remain on sale long after the PlayStation 3 arrived. The newer console was expensive and initially difficult to manufacture. The PS2 was cheap, familiar, and supported by a software library that had been growing for years. There was little reason to remove it from the market while people still wanted one.

When production finally ended in December 2012, Otori traveled to China to watch the last PS2 leave the line.

By then, its chips had shrunk, its case had changed, and its manufacturing had moved, but it still ran software created for a console designed in the late 1990s.

More than two decades after its launch, people are still playing its games, repairing its hardware, and discovering what Sony’s engineers managed to fit inside that black case.

The usual explanation for the PS2’s success begins with DVD. Sony priced the launch-model SCPH-10000 at ¥39,800, placing it in roughly the same range as some of the more affordable standalone DVD players reaching the Japanese market. For roughly $370 at the exchange rate of the time, buyers received a new game console, backward compatibility with original PlayStation software, and access to the fastest-growing home-entertainment format in the world.

The DVD drive did more than make the hardware a good deal. It connected the PS2 to a film industry much larger than PlayStation.

Sony’s Final Rehearsal

In February 2000, Sony held PlayStation Festival 2000 in Chiba. February 18 was reserved for the industry and press, followed by two public days on February 19 and 20. The PlayStation 2 would reach Japanese stores less than two weeks later, on March 4.

The festival was Sony’s final public rehearsal for the platform. Visitors saw working development software, including upcoming games, along with the startup animation and the browser interface used to manage memory cards and discs.

Near the entrance, away from the main presentations, the company had built a smaller stage to explain another feature it kept emphasizing: the PlayStation 2 could also function as a DVD player.

The movie chosen for the demonstration was The Matrix. Promotional signage beside the stage advertised its Japanese DVD release on March 17, thirteen days after the PS2 launch.

The choice carried more weight in early 2000 than it might today. Twenty-six years later, younger readers may know The Matrix through references that survived the original release: green code falling down a screen, black coats, narrow sunglasses, the red and blue pills, and Neo bending backward as bullets passed overhead. At the time, those images were still new, and they seemed to appear everywhere at once.

Popular culture was more concentrated then. Audiences encountered many of the same television shows, trailers, magazine, and advertising campaigns. A film could become part of the common language even among people who had not watched it.

The Matrix was one of the clearest examples. Released in 1999, it earned more than $460 million worldwide, but its influence was most visible in how quickly the rest of popular culture absorbed its visual language.

The timing also perfect. Computers and the internet were becoming ordinary parts of daily life while still retaining an air of mystery. The approach of the year 2000 and anxiety surrounding the Y2K effect had made software and digital systems subjects of everyday conversation. The Matrix gave that moment a recognizable form, presenting a world in which physical and computer-generated reality had become difficult to separate. Its combination of cyberpunk, martial arts, fashion, electronic music, and new visual effects made the digital future look seductive as well as threatening.

That aligned closely with the image Sony wanted for the PlayStation 2. The company presented the console as a meeting point between games, cinema, music, and computer-generated worlds. When The Matrix appeared onstage, Sony did not need to explain what the movie represented. It arrived with a ready-made idea of the future that the company wanted the PS2 to inherit.

Warner understood the connection as well. The Japanese DVD had originally been scheduled for release one week later, but Time Warner Entertainment Japan moved it forward to March 17 to take advantage of the enthusiasm surrounding the PS2. It sold 600,000 copies in its first two weeks, at a time when 10,000 copies was still considered a successful DVD release in Japan.

What the PS2 Actually Launched With

The importance of the movie becomes clearer when looking at the software Japanese customers could buy on March 4. The ten PS2 launch titles were A-Train 6, Eternal Ring, Kakinoki Shogi IV, Kessen, Stepping Selection, Street Fighter EX3, drummania, Mahjong Taikai III: Millennium League, Morita Shogi, and Ridge Racer V.

The lineup had real strengths. Ridge Racer V provided the familiar spectacle of a new PlayStation launching with a new racing game. Kessen filled the screen with large groups of soldiers, while Street Fighter EX3 brought an established arcade franchise to the system.

The full list also shows how early the hardware had arrived. Two of the ten games were shogi titles and another was mahjong. The selection included railway management, historical strategy, rhythm games, and a first-person fantasy RPG. Sony’s own FantaVision followed five days after launch, while Tekken Tag Tournament did not arrive until March 30.

The games now remembered as central to the PS2 era were still ahead. Gran Turismo 3, Final Fantasy X, Metal Gear Solid 2, Devil May Cry, and Grand Theft Auto III would eventually help define the console, but that identity did not yet exist when Japanese customers first encountered the machine.

Those buyers were not limited to ten games. Backward compatibility allowed existing PlayStation owners to carry much of the software library they had already built into the new generation. They did not have to begin again from zero, and that continuity made the decision to upgrade easier.

Backward compatibility, however, did not give the PS2 a new game capable of defining its launch. The old library explained why existing PlayStation owners could move to the new machine. DVD helped explain why the machine might matter to everyone else.

Sony entered the generation with enormous momentum, competitive pricing, backward compatibility, and much stronger software still to come. The Matrix did not cause the PS2’s success, but it gave the console an immediate cultural role before its native library had found one.

Shuhei Yoshida would later recall that Sony had been “awfully unprepared” for the transition between the first two PlayStations. He also remembered that, when the PS2 launched in Japan, “the best-selling software was actually the Matrix DVD.” His comment was a retrospective observation rather than audited launch data, but it captured the unusual position of the console in March 2000. The hardware was already a phenomenon before its native game library was ready to explain why.

The launch games could demonstrate polygons, animation, scale, and the technical improvement over the original PlayStation. The Matrix offered something they did not yet have: a large international audience and an established place in popular culture. Someone with little interest in the launch lineup could still understand the appeal of watching one of the most discussed films in the world on DVD.

That was one of the great advantages of physical media at the beginning of the PS2 era. A Warner Bros. film, an audio CD, an original PlayStation game, and a new PS2 release could all enter the same tray. None had to belong to Sony to make PlayStation more valuable.

Even the packaging reinforced the connection. The PS2 games displayed at the festival used the same tall style of case associated with DVD movies. On a store shelf, the two forms of entertainment looked like neighboring parts of the same system before entering the same black machine.

Today, Sony faces the opposite incentive. A physical game can be bought outside the PlayStation Store, then lent, resold, collected, or preserved without remaining tied to an account. From Sony’s perspective, the openness that once brought outside value into PlayStation now allows part of the PlayStation economy to remain outside its platform.

The PlayStation 2 eventually earned its reputation through one of the largest and most varied game libraries ever assembled. In March 2000, that future was still mostly a promise. Its disc drive connected it to a much wider entertainment market.

During those first weeks in Japan, The Matrix did not replace the PS2’s launch games, but it explained why Sony’s new machine belonged under the television more clearly than any one of them.

The PS2 became more valuable every time the wider culture produced something new because all of it could enter the same tray. The modern PlayStation is far more capable, but more of its world now begins and ends inside Sony’s account system. In 2000, physical media did not keep PlayStation in the past. It opened the machine to everything happening around it.

For people who have watched Sony for long enough, the question was not really whether this would happen. It was when. Now PlayStation discs have a hard end date.

It would be easy to describe this as Sony finally getting the control it always wanted. There is some truth in that. A digital game lives inside Sony’s account system in a way a disc never fully does.

For anyone who has followed PlayStation’s history, there is an obvious irony here. PlayStation was born on the disc. When the original PlayStation launched in Japan in 1994, CD-ROM was part of its identity. Compared with cartridges, discs gave Sony a cheaper way to manufacture and distribute bigger games. They also helped Sony enter a console business still shaped by cartridge manufacturing, platform control, and the old rules of Nintendo’s era.

Thirty years later, digital distribution is replacing the disc for many of the same reasons. It is easier to scale, easier to manage, and easier to control. Ending the disc is not Sony betraying the original PlayStation idea. It is Sony is taking that exact same logic to its most brutal endpoint.

Console games spent years trying to live in two worlds at once. On one side, they still belonged to the old retail world: boxed releases, used copies, store shelves, and clearance bins. On the other side, the games themselves had already become digital products: installed, authenticated, patched, and tied to accounts.

The disc survived as the bridge between those two versions of PlayStation. It remained the familiar object on the shelf, even as the game it represented became less and less contained by it.

PlayStation discs were never supported by PlayStation alone. They belonged to a much larger optical-media ecosystem built around replication plants, packaging, shipping, and retail logistics. That infrastructure made discs cheap, common, and worth improving. As it shrank, physical PlayStation games were surviving after the system around them had already thinned out.

That makes the end of the PlayStation disc an industrial story, not just a retail one. The machinery behind it was built for the age when Sony treated optical media as a central part of the business. For decades, it made sense because music, movies, software, and consoles all depended on discs. As those markets moved elsewhere, PlayStation was no longer riding a growing format but the remains of one.

Discs are still being made but survival is not the same as scale. At some point, keeping that machinery alive for a shrinking part of the games business stopped looking like continuity and started looking like drag.

Movies survived as a collector market: boutique labels, limited editions, restorations, Steelbooks, premium packaging, and smaller audiences willing to pay more for ownership. That can work for a specialist 4K release. Physical games are a very different problem when they are expected to remain the default format for a mass-market console business. A boutique 4K Blu-ray can survive as a specialist object. A PlayStation disc has to justify manufacturing, logistics, retail space, platform support, and hardware decisions across an entire ecosystem.

The mistake is confusing the continued existence of discs with the continued strength of the system behind them. Physical media can still matter culturally while becoming harder to defend industrially. That is exactly why this moment feels so strange. The disc still means something to players at the same time that it has stopped solving the problems Sony cares about most.

The old boxed-game business also made more sense when games were cheaper to make, more launch-driven, and easier to move on from. A publisher could spend 18 months making a game, sell as many copies as possible that year, then shift attention to the next release.

Modern AAA games can take several years to build, cost hundreds of millions of dollars, and still fail if they do not keep selling for years after launch. The business is about keeping an expensive project commercially alive through long-tail sales over time.

Players are not wrong to defend physical media. A disc can be bought used, lent to a friend, resold, left on a shelf, or found years later in a store bin for a price Sony did not set.

For Sony, the old retail business has a flaw built into it. A used disc can be sold again and again without the developer, publisher, or platform holder earning anything from those later sales. That was easier to accept when budgets were lower and games were more launch-driven. It becomes harder to defend internally when the industry wants less risk on projects that can cost as much as films.

Digital removes a lot of mess for Sony. It does not have to manufacture the game, ship it, take returns, support used circulation, or watch the same copy move through the market for years. A digital purchase stays inside Sony’s account system.

That is not the whole reason discs are ending, but it is one reason the old setup became harder to defend inside a company that now needs PlayStation to be more than just one more business unit. As Sony restructures parts of the hardware world that once defined it, PlayStation becomes one of its most important controlled ecosystems.

Even the public numbers only show part of the picture. Sales split between physical and digital show where games were bought. Sony can also see far more than that: disc usage, subscriptions, digital purchases, free-to-play habits, Store behavior, and how players use the hardware. A user can describe themselves as a physical-media person and still behave like a digital-first customer in Sony’s telemetry.

GTA VI preorders probably did not cause this decision, but they may have made the timing feel safer. When preorders opened on June 25, the most revealing part was not only that the biggest game of the generation was being sold through digital storefronts. It was how normal that already felt.

Players proudly posted screenshots of expensive digital preorders, while the lack of a real disc did not produce anything close to the same reaction Sony would face only days later. The same online culture that treated a digital GTA VI preorder as routine was suddenly furious when Sony turned that direction into a platform policy.

That does not make players hypocrites. It means the transition has already happened around them in ways that often feel invisible.

Most players were born into a world where game discs were already normal. They did not see the industrial system that made them possible. They saw the box, the disc, the shelf, and the store, and assumed those things were permanent because they had always been there. So when GTA VI appeared as an expensive digital preorder, many people treated it as just another purchase. The idea that they were being shown the future of the market was not necessarily in their minds.

That is the part Sony understands better than players do. A company does not only listen to what people say they value. It watches what they accept when the game is big enough.

Players may not think of themselves as digital-first customers, but their behavior can already look digital-first from inside Sony’s data. The backlash against losing discs is real, but outrage and purchasing behavior are not the same signal. Sony does not need every category to become digital at the same speed. It only needs enough of the total business to move that way. Physical sales did not need to hit zero. They only needed to become expensive and limited enough that the old setup was no longer worth carrying forward.

For most of PlayStation’s history, a new generation was triggered by a technical limit. The original console made 3D and CD-ROM practical. The PlayStation 2 carried DVD into the living room. The PlayStation 3 pushed Blu-ray and HD. The PlayStation 4 simplified development. The PlayStation 5 solved storage speed and asset streaming.

The next turn may be different. Sony may be preparing for a cycle where the money side of PlayStation has to be cleaned up as much as the hardware does.

By 2028, the disc will disappear because it stopped solving the problems Sony now cares about most. Controlled ecosystems do not like objects that can keep moving after the first sale. The next generation of PlayStation may not be triggered by a technical limit at all. It may be triggered by economics.

The backlash cannot be dismissed as nostalgia. Physical media is not only a purchasing habit. It is one of the last parts of PlayStation that can still leave Sony’s account system.

A disc is not perfect preservation, especially when modern games depend on patches, servers, and downloads. But it still leaves more in the player’s hands than a digital license does. A digital library depends on Sony’s willingness to keep old systems alive.

That is why the physical-versus-digital argument gets so messy. Technically, people are right to say a disc does not give you absolute ownership of the software in some pure legal sense. But that is not how most players experience it. They are not thinking in contract-law terms. They are thinking in precedent. There has not really been a mainstream case where Sony or Microsoft mass-disabled ordinary offline retail discs.

There was a moment when the end of the disc might have felt cleaner. Digital still carried a sense of convenience, progress, and possibility.

But in 2026, the mood around technology is different. People are tired of subscriptions, price increases, disappearing purchases, and terms of service they never really control. They hear constantly that technology is making life more expensive, and that access can be changed or taken away.

In that world, the PlayStation disc is not just a disc anymore. It becomes one of the last parts of the old console business that still feels understandable. The object gives players a small sense of control. Sony is removing a piece of the old console world at a time when people already feel like everything else is being taken out of their hands.

Now the disc becomes another obsolete Sony object: technically outdated, commercially inconvenient, and more emotionally valuable the moment it starts to disappear.

One of the most important parts of the site is the filtering system. This is not just a search box or a long list of model names. The archive can be browsed by decade, year, series, sub-brand, category, format, features, battery type, storage capacity, and Japan-only releases, depending on the product family. That means you can narrow the Walkman archive to a specific era, find cassette models with Auto-reverse, Dolby, Mega Bass, or remote-control support, look through MiniDisc recorders with optical input, browse Discman models by CD format, or move through Network Walkman players by storage capacity, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Hi-Res, Android, USB-C, microSD, and other digital-era features. The filters are there because the archive is meant to work as a research tool, not only as a visual gallery.

The cassette Walkman archive is the center of the site. It currently contains 441 model entries, covering the original cassette era from 1979 through the final years of Sony’s cassette line.

The site is not only a cassette archive. Cassette Walkman is where the story begins, but the full Walkman story runs through CD, MiniDisc, flash memory, hard drives, ATRAC, software ecosystems, and the complicated transition into digital audio.

The archive now spans around 12,000 public pages across 10 languages, with more than 1,000 Sony portable-audio model entries at launch. I am not aware of another Sony portable audio archive built at this scale, and I do not think there will be many attempts to make one this large.

This was created in part thanks to the support of paid subscribers, who have helped make it possible to spend the time required to research, organize, write, translate, and build something this extensive. ObsoleteSony.com is not only a launch-day project. It is a long-term archive that will keep growing.

The Walkman and Sony personal audio sections are the beginning. With continued support, I want to keep expanding the archive into more Sony categories over time, so more of the company’s design, product, and technology history has somewhere permanent to live.

On July 1, 1979, Sony released the first Walkman. 47 years later, the Walkman Archive by Obsolete Sony is open.

That success created a harder problem. Sony no longer had to prove that portable music could exist. It had to keep Walkman from becoming just another name in a category everyone else was now chasing.

Personal cassette players were everywhere. Competitors could fight on price, features, sound, and styling. The shape of the category had become easy to copy, and a small cassette player with headphones was no longer automatically a Sony idea in the mind of someone standing in a store.

Compact disc added pressure from another direction. It did not replace cassette in daily portable use, not yet. CD was still too fragile in motion and too dependent on stable conditions. But it changed where prestige was moving. Cassette still belonged to the street, the train, the school bag, and the long walk home. CD made the future point somewhere else.

Sony’s Walkman lineup from this period feels like a company protecting its position from every side. The archive records 24 Walkman models for 1987. Sony was no longer relying on one defining machine. It was surrounding the market with variations.

A buyer could move between simple playback, radio, recording, premium mechanics, smaller bodies, or more design-led models without leaving the same broad idea. These were not dramatic inventions. They were ways of making Walkman fit more people, more habits, and more situations.

Specifications still mattered, but they had started to behave differently. A spec sheet could now be compared across brands. Features alone no longer guaranteed authority.

The WM-501 does not explain the whole year, but it shows the shift clearly. It had the right ingredients: a thin 21 mm body, rechargeable gumstick battery, Auto Reverse, Dolby B, Dynamic Bass Boost, an amorphous head, and a premium shell. The real effect came from how those details sat together. The machine felt resolved.

That was more important than any single claim. In a crowded market, Sony’s advantage was not only that it could add features. It could make those features feel like they belonged to a complete object.

Compact disc made that position more important. CD made cassette look older, but it did not make it less useful overnight. A Discman could offer cleaner sound and a more modern promise, but it could not yet absorb the ordinary behaviors cassette had already mastered.

Sony’s portable CD models from this period read like a format still looking for stable places to live. The D-30, D-2001, D-T100, D-600, and D-601K point toward the desk, the car, the bag, the remote control, and the radio tuner. Each one brought compact disc closer to daily use, but none of them yet had cassette’s casual relationship with motion.

That was not failure. It was the nature of the moment. Discman had prestige and future energy. Walkman had behavior.

Sony had already won the first Walkman battle. It had made portable music desirable and turned private headphone listening into a global habit. The next stage was harder because success had made the idea easier to copy. Once the market filled, specifications became easier to compare. Once compact disc began defining the future of recorded sound, cassette could no longer own progress by default.

Sony kept refining the machines, but it also refined the position around them. Familiarity became strength.

What changed was everything around it.

By 1986, the Japanese yen had strengthened and Sony’s export business began to feel the pressure. Products built in Japan became harder to price competitively overseas, and the same sale returned less profit once converted back. The margins that had supported the company’s portable audio expansion were no longer reliable, and Sony was forced into a more disciplined position. Manufacturing began shifting outside Japan and components were sourced more flexibly across regions.

This did not simplify the product line. It did the opposite. Instead of relying on a single defining model, Sony spread its portable audio systems across multiple tiers and use cases, reusing platforms and refining them in parallel. Risk was distributed across the lineup, with certain models carrying more of the forward-looking ambition than others.

At the same time, portable audio itself had split into two parallel systems. Cassette still defined how people actually used portable music. It adapted to movement and different environments. Compact disc introduced a different expectation. It didn’t take long for the next question to appear: why should that experience remain fixed in place?

Sony did not wait for a clean technical solution. Part of that was practical. Memory and buffering technologies that could make early CD players truly portable were still too expensive to integrate into compact devices, leaving mechanical solutions as the only viable path. Within those limits, form became one of the few areas where Sony could move decisively.

By this point, portable CD was still in its earliest phase. Sony had introduced the format to motion with the Sony D-50 Discman, followed by the refined Sony D-50 MkII Discman in late 1985. Both models proved that compact disc playback could leave the home, but they still treated portability cautiously. Size had been reduced, but the underlying assumptions remained closer to transportable home equipment than to something that could be used freely on the move.

With the Sony D-100 Discman, known in some markets as the “Super Discman,” that approach begins to take physical form.

At a glance, the D-100 looks like the next logical step for portable CD. It reduces the size of earlier Discman models while expanding their functionality, incorporating program playback, repeat modes, and A–B repeat within a more compact transport. Measuring roughly five inches square and under an inch thick, it was among the thinnest portable CD players of its time, pushing the format toward a flatter shape that would later become standard.

The behavior did not follow at the same pace. The internal structure remained fully mechanical, relying on suspension and tracking precision rather than electronic compensation. Without memory buffering or anti-skip circuitry, playback stability depended entirely on how the device was handled. Movement was tolerated within narrow limits, and consistent performance still assumed a controlled position. Despite its reduced size, the unit was still intended for careful use in a stable environment, and that constraint defined the model more clearly than its feature list.

Within those limits, the D-100 performed predictably. Its 16-bit linear conversion and analog output stage delivered the same resolution as Sony’s full-size CD players of the period, with dynamic range exceeding 90 dB. It was positioned as a premium compact model, priced closer to home CD players than to everyday portable devices. Sound quality was not the compromise.

Even the way Sony presented the D-100 reflected that tension. In promotional material, the unit was sometimes shown with an optional infrared remote adaptor. The player itself was compact and reduced, visually aligned with the scale of a Walkman, while the remote suggested distance, stability, and control from a fixed position. The form pointed forward, while the way it was framed still echoed an earlier context.

What stands out is that these limitations do not read as accidental. In physical terms, the D-100 already resembles what a Discman would become. The reduced thickness, the flattened proportions, and the compact layout feel closer to later designs than to the larger, more transitional machines that came before it. The difference shows up less in how it looks and more in how it behaves.

Sony had already taken a similar approach with cassette. The Sony WM-10 Walkman pushed miniaturization to an extreme in its first iteration, before the platform had fully stabilized around power and durability. It established the form early, with the experience catching up in later revisions. The D-100 follows that same direction, compressing compact disc into a shape that suggests true portability while the underlying system continues to depend on stability and control.

There is also a competitive effect. By committing early to a smaller, more refined form, Sony sets a visual standard for what portable CD should be. Once that expectation is established, anything larger or less resolved begins to feel behind, even if the underlying technology is more stable or practical.

The D-100 exposes the limits of early portable CD at the same moment Sony is trying to push it forward. Cassette systems carried their own compromises, including noise, mechanical wear, and limited dynamic range, but by this point they had largely solved the problem of movement. A Walkman could disappear into a pocket and keep working across different situations. Compact disc approached the problem differently, redefining expectations around sound while still assuming stability.

For Sony, this was not only a technical challenge but also a structural one. Cassette still defined everyday portability, while compact disc was already shaping the future of recorded sound. Both systems had to coexist. Cassette expanded outward across use cases and environments, while compact disc compressed inward in an attempt to carry its advantages into a portable form.

The D-100 points to what portable CD was meant to become, before the technology was fully capable of supporting it. It already knew what it wanted to be. The rest of the system hadn’t caught up yet.

The Walkman did not move toward a final version. It spread outward and settled into distinct roles, and the differences between models began to be more important than any sense of progression. A player like the WM-50 adjusted the form, softening the edges and making it easier to carry over long periods of time, while the WM-75 took the same foundation into outdoor use, where movement and weather were expected rather than avoided.

What this created was not a ladder of better machines, but a field of solutions. Each model sat in place without displacing another, covering a range that was already complete. By that point, you did not need to see every model to understand the line. The types were already familiar, and the differences between them reflected use rather than novelty.

The high end followed the same logic. The WM-D3 carried a professional approach into a portable form, with manual level control and a structure derived from Sony’s higher-end equipment.

Even the outliers fit within that structure. The WM-W800, built around duplicating tapes directly, reflected a behavior that already existed rather than introducing a new one. It only made sense in a format that was still being used actively.

Some of the most important changes were less visible. The WM-101 did not present itself as a breakthrough, but it stopped compromising. A slim rechargeable battery paired with an AA backup reduced thickness in a way that felt permanent, giving the player a form that could be repeated and refined rather than continually reworked.

Across all of this, the pattern established between 1982 and 1984 became clearer. Playback, recording, movement, and manipulation were all addressed within the same format, each one solved in hardware. Cassette was no longer just carrying music. It was carrying a set of expectations about how portable audio should behave.

That was the system in place when Sony began testing the first portable compact disc players.

The D-50 had shown that a CD player could be made portable, but it did not behave like one. Without skip protection, even small movements could interrupt playback, which meant that many of these early units spent more time on desks, hotel tables, or car seats than in motion. Walkmans rode in pockets on morning runs and daily commutes; Discmans mostly waited for the ride home, where they could be used without interruption.

When the D-50 Mk II appeared at the very end of the year, the first model to carry the Discman name, the changes made the idea more coherent. The battery became integrated, removing the need for external attachments. The structure tightened, making the player easier to carry and live with over longer periods.

Even then, it did not expand in the same way, remaining focused on playback and still demanding stability, improving the experience without ever taking on the range of roles the Walkman already supported.

The direction of the Walkman line makes that difference easier to see. A player like the WM-55 reshaped how the device sat in the hand, while the WM-101 reduced its thickness to something closer to a permanent form. The Sports models were built to move, sealed and reinforced for conditions where stability could not be assumed, and machines like the WM-W800 treated the cassette itself as something to manipulate rather than simply play. These were not variations in sound. They were variations in use, and they described a kind of portability that the first Discman could not yet sustain.

So when the Discman arrived, it did not enter an empty space. It entered a system that was already full.

What made 1985 important was not that one replaced the other, but that the conditions for replacement were not there. Sony could already see where sound quality was going. The high end of cassette would not remain the reference point forever. But the Walkman was no longer defined by sound quality alone, and it had already spread into forms that a single new format could not immediately absorb.

The transition does not begin with disappearance. It begins with overlap, and in 1985 that overlap was uneven, with one system already embedded in everyday use and the other still learning how to move within it.

That change does not center on one defining model. It shows up across the lineup. For the first time, a large part of the range is made up of simpler, more direct machines. Playback-only Walkmans with fewer features, lighter construction, and familiar cassette mechanisms that no longer need to prove anything new. Models like the WM-11 or WM-22 are not built to demonstrate engineering ambition. They are built to remove friction, making it easier for more people to own one without having to think too much about what makes it special.

Placed next to what Sony is still doing at the high end, the intent becomes clearer. In Japan, refinement does not slow down. Machines like the WM-DC2 and WM-D6C push cassette performance further, with direct-drive transports, quartz-locked speed control, and more advanced noise reduction systems that treat the Walkman less like a casual device and more like a compact audio component. These are not designed to move in large numbers. They exist to define what the format can do when taken seriously.

The contrast between those two directions did not exist in the same way before. On one side, the Walkman becomes easier to buy, simpler to understand, and easier to live with. On the other, it becomes more exact, more technical, and harder to surpass. That split follows the markets. Japan is ahead, both in terms of technology and what consumers are willing to spend, and it can absorb more advanced machines. Outside Japan, the situation is different. The Walkman is already popular, but it has not yet reached the point where it feels universal, and price plays a much larger role in how far it can spread.

Instead of forcing one version of the product across all regions, Sony begins shaping the lineup to fit those different conditions. Simpler models move outward into broader markets, while more refined ones continue to serve a domestic audience that expects and supports them. The Walkman stops behaving like a single global object and becomes something more flexible, a system that can stretch across regions without losing its identity entirely.

That flexibility shows up in how the lineup starts to organize itself. Radio Walkmans continue to multiply, no longer treated as special additions but as expected variations. Compact designs remain part of the story, but they no longer need to carry the same sense of spectacle they did a year earlier. Rugged machines aimed at outdoor use hold their own space, building on the logic introduced by the Sports Walkman. The differences between models begin to reflect price, geography, and use as much as function or design. You no longer need to see every model to understand the line. You can recognize the types.

At the same time, Sony is no longer trying to hold all of those directions under a single definition of what the Walkman should be. The product becomes easier to understand because its roles are clearer. There is a basic Walkman, a radio Walkman, a sports model, and a more refined machine. Each one answers a different expectation, and together they form something that can scale far beyond the audience the original product had reached.

Alongside all of this, something else appears that does not quite belong to the same system. The D-50, Sony’s first portable compact disc player, introduces a different kind of presence. It is larger, heavier, and still dependent on an external battery pack, with no internal power solution. It does not disappear into daily routines in the same way, and it does not sit comfortably in the spaces the Walkman has already made its own. Its importance comes from something more fundamental.

For the first time, digital audio can be carried.

Up to that point, cassette had been able to carry both portability and quality within the same system. Improvements in transport design, including the move away from traditional belt-driven mechanisms toward direct-drive systems, had been enough to keep pushing it forward. The best Walkman could still stand as the most complete version of portable listening. The arrival of the D-50 introduces a different path, one that suggests sound quality may no longer be tied to refining cassette mechanics at all.

That shift does not weaken the Walkman so much as it clarifies its role. If compact disc begins to define where sound quality is going, cassette becomes something else entirely, a format built around convenience, familiarity, and everyday use. Sony leans into that position, not by abandoning refinement, but by placing accessibility on equal footing with performance.

By the end of 1984, the Walkman is no longer just a product or a unified line. It behaves like a global system, with some models built for scale, others for performance, and a new format emerging alongside them. What ties it together is no longer a single idea, but the fact that Sony is building for different listeners in different places.

That is the point where the Walkman stops being something you discover and starts becoming something you expect to find, and once that happens, adoption no longer unfolds gradually but begins to accelerate as it moves from being widely available to simply part of everyday life.

That shift is easy to miss if you only look at the year as a list of models. On paper, 1983 does not seem as technically dramatic as the year before. There was no new Disc Drive breakthrough, no new professional recorder, no major leap in function. What changed instead was the way Sony distributed the Walkman across everyday life. It became smaller, more specialized, and more visually distinct. That kind of refinement already sat more naturally inside Japanese consumer culture than it did in much of the West, where electronics were still often framed more bluntly around hardware and performance. The broad lifestyle DNA had been there from the start, but this is where Sony began breaking it into clearer forms.

The clearest sign of that change was the WM-20.

By 1983, Sony had already made the Walkman portable enough for most people. It could fit in a bag, clip to a belt, or travel easily. The WM-20 was not really about solving portability anymore. It was about pushing miniaturization into something almost theatrical. When closed, the machine was only slightly larger than a cassette case itself. Its sliding expandable mechanism made the whole thing feel improbable, with the battery compartment, head assembly, and transport components all moving together to preserve full cassette compatibility in a body that looked barely capable of containing one. The mechanism was not hidden behind the appeal. It was the appeal.

Sony was no longer just making the Walkman easier to carry. It was making smallness itself feel desirable. Even now, it is the kind of machine people react to physically. You collapse it shut in your hand once and immediately understand why it mattered. It made the Walkman feel less like a shrunken tape deck and more like an object people could become attached to.

If the WM-20 turned miniaturization into theater, the WM-F5 pushed the Walkman into a completely different environment.

The F5 was the first Sports Walkman, and it expanded the product’s territory almost immediately. Earlier Walkmans still carried a fairly narrow image. They belonged to commuters, students, travelers, and people listening alone in transit. The F5 pushed that image outward. Suddenly the Walkman was being positioned for movement, exercise, rough handling, and the outdoors.

Its bright yellow body was impossible to mistake for one of Sony’s more polished urban machines. The reinforced shell, sealed construction, rubberized controls, and built-in FM tuner gave it a completely different presence. This was not a Walkman designed to disappear into a jacket pocket or sit neatly on a desk. It was designed to survive being carried into environments where earlier models would have felt fragile or out of place.

That is what makes the F5 so important. It changed where the Walkman was supposed to belong. The yellow “Sports” look would remain recognizable for years after, but the more important shift was conceptual: Sony had started treating portable audio less like one universal object and more like something that could be tailored to specific kinds of use.

That same logic shows up in the WM-F20.

It was essentially the radio-equipped extension of the WM-20 idea, adding FM and TV audio reception while preserving the same expandable compact body. That alone says a lot. Sony was no longer leaving strong ideas as one-off products. Once the company had something as compelling as the WM-20’s sliding cassette-size form, it carried it into another branch of the lineup and made it usable in another context.

That is one of the more revealing things about 1983. Sony was starting to identify successful forms and stretch them across adjacent use cases instead of treating each new model like a standalone event. The lineup was beginning to behave less like a collection of isolated products and more like a system with internal logic.

You can also feel the year shifting visually. By 1983, the Walkman could no longer rely only on novelty and function. It had to compete inside everyday life, where people noticed what objects looked like and what kind of person they seemed made for. Some models felt more athletic, some more compact, some more polished, some more playful. The differences were no longer just technical. They were becoming social and visual too.

By the end of 1983, the Walkman had become harder to describe as a single product with minor variations. It was starting to split into distinct identities, each one aimed at a different kind of person, place, or routine. That kind of thinking did not feel especially strange in Japan, where compactness, specialization, and product refinement already carried a different kind of cultural weight.

Sony was already moving somewhere more personal. In hindsight, it was not just an important year for the Walkman, but an early glimpse of a product logic the rest of consumer technology would eventually adopt. And once that process began, the Walkman was never going to stay simple for long...

Seen side by side, Sony’s core Japan-market Walkman releases from that year do not read like a tidy sequence of upgrades so much as a company discovering, in real time, how far its hit cassette player could be stretched. What had started as a single, sharply defined product was already turning into something broader, a line that could carry different ideas at once.

The WM-R2 is one of the clearest early signs of that shift. Recording had long been part of portable cassette hardware, but bringing it into the Walkman line altered what the product represented. The R2 still looked close enough to earlier models to feel continuous, yet functionally it had already crossed into a different category. A playback-only Walkman is a listening device; once recording is introduced, it becomes something more open, capable of capturing a voice, saving an idea, or documenting a moment.

That was the point of the R2. Sony was no longer keeping the Walkman tightly tied to private stereo playback, and the brand was already beginning to absorb functions that had previously lived elsewhere.

The WM-F2 pushed that expansion outward rather than inward. Instead of focusing on input, it opened the machine to the outside world by adding FM radio and the ability to record directly from broadcasts, loosening the assumption that portable listening had to revolve around whatever tape you carried with you. In Japan, it sat near the top of the lineup at ¥42,000, a signal that Sony saw it as a serious branch rather than a casual variation.

Radio-recording was not new in 1982, having already appeared in larger cassette recorders and boomboxes, but scale changed the experience. The F2 brought that capability into a compact personal stereo, something you carried rather than placed in a room. In practical terms, it meant chart songs, live broadcasts, and casual listening without preparation. You no longer had to rely entirely on whatever tape you brought along.

Once recording entered the format at all, Sony did not leave it at the casual end for long. The WM-D6 extended the same idea into far more serious territory.

The D6 was a true portable recorder, equipped with microphone and line inputs, manual recording level controls, Dolby noise reduction, and a quartz-controlled motor for stable tape speed. It drew directly from Sony’s field-recording expertise, bringing that approach into the Walkman family instead of keeping it separate.

Seen next to the other 1982 models, the D6 almost feels like it belongs to another class of device, which is precisely what makes it revealing. By that point, the Walkman was no longer limited to light, personal playback. The same form could support more deliberate, more technical use than the original concept had suggested.

Sony was also refining the core machine itself, and the WM-DD makes that shift clear. Rather than adding new features, it focused on the transport, replacing the traditional belt-driven system with a direct-drive mechanism that reduced one of the cassette format’s most persistent weaknesses. Belts stretch and wear; removing them improved stability at the most fundamental level. Its wow and flutter performance, around 0.08% WRMS, was a serious technical achievement for a portable device of the period.

This was a different kind of improvement. The DD did not need additional functions to stand out. It performed the same task with greater consistency and control, and that emphasis on precision would later define some of the most respected Walkman in the entire line. In 1982, it was simply another direction being explored alongside several others.

The WM-7 points toward yet another shift, not in capability or sound, but in how the machine behaved. Earlier Walkmans still felt like small tape decks, their controls tied directly to mechanical linkages that required the user to manage the transport physically. The WM-7 began to change that relationship.

With electronic logic control, features like auto-reverse became possible, and the machine responded less like a mechanism and more like a coordinated system. Soft-touch controls and a wired remote reinforced that shift, pulling the experience away from the tactile feel of traditional tape hardware.

Across consumer electronics in the early 1980s, this transition was already underway. Devices were becoming less visibly mechanical and more electronically mediated, and the WM-7 reflects that moment. You no longer worked the machine in the same way. You gave it an instruction, and it handled the rest.

The 1982 lineup looks less like one family of players and more like several distinct ideas sharing the same form. One branch leaned into recording, one into radio, one into serious field use, one into mechanical precision, and one into a more controlled, electronically managed experience.

None of this sat outside the market. It came directly from it. Sony was moving quickly, filling gaps, covering price points, and defending a hit before competitors could flatten the category. In doing so, it revealed something early on: the Walkman was flexible enough to support very different kinds of use under a single name.

Much of what would define the line later can already be seen here in early form. Radio would become a standard extension of portable listening, recording would remain useful but more specialized, electronic control would become normal, and direct-drive precision would define the high end.

By the end of 1982, the question was no longer “Do you have a Walkman?” It was “Which one?”

For most Walkman owners the wire was simply part of the experience. It dangled from jacket pockets, snagged on door handles, and wrapped itself around the player every time the headphones were pulled out of a bag. Anyone who carried a Walkman regularly remembers that ritual of untangling the cord before pressing play.

The timing of these experiments was not accidental. By the late 1980s cassette Walkman sales had begun to slow as compact discs gained attention. Sony’s Discman represented the next generation of portable listening, but early CD players were still large, expensive, and prone to skipping during movement. Cassette players remained the practical choice for everyday portable music. Features like wireless listening helped Sony keep the cassette Walkman feeling modern while the CD format was still finding its place.

Between 1988 and 1999 Sony released a small group of Walkman models that tried to replace the headphone wire with a short-range radio link. Long before Bluetooth, the company experimented with wireless listening by embedding miniature RF transmitters inside cassette players and pairing them with dedicated wireless receivers or headphones.

The idea never became a major branch of the Walkman lineup, but Sony kept returning to it. What began as a technical curiosity gradually evolved into a small ecosystem of transmitters, receivers, and remote controls before quietly disappearing at the end of the 1990s.

Seen across the timeline, the wireless Walkman passed through three rough phases. The earliest models simply replaced the headphone cable. Early-1990s versions turned the receiver into a remote control interface. Later designs refined the system and packaged it as a complete cordless listening setup.

1988 WM-505: The First Wireless Walkman

The WM-505 introduced Sony’s wireless cassette concept in 1988. Inside the player, the headphone output fed a miniature RF transmitter that broadcast the audio signal to dedicated wireless headphones. Auto-reverse playback, Dolby B noise reduction, and Dynamic Bass Boost formed the core feature set. Power came from a rechargeable gumstick battery supported by an external AA pack.

Sony did not invent the underlying technology for this model. The transmitter circuitry was adapted from RF wireless headphone systems the company had already developed earlier in the decade for televisions and home audio.

How the Transmission Worked

Inside the Walkman, the audio signal from the cassette playback amplifier was routed to a miniature radio transmitter. The signal was frequency-modulated (FM) onto a radio carrier and broadcast from a small internal antenna.

The wireless headphones or receiver module contained a tuned RF receiver designed for that carrier frequency. Once the signal was captured, the receiver demodulated the FM carrier and reconstructed the audio waveform. A small amplifier inside the receiver then powered the headphone drivers.

Most of these systems transmitted audio in the same low-power RF bands used by wireless television headphones, typically around the 863–865 MHz UHF band in Europe, with comparable low-power UHF frequencies used in other regions.

Sony also invested in better receiver design than many consumer wireless systems of the time. Instead of simple regenerative receivers found in cheaper wireless headphones, many Walkman receivers used superheterodyne RF circuits, a design described in Sony service manuals for several wireless Walkman models from the early 1990s. This architecture provided improved tuning stability, reduced interference, and more reliable reception.

Because the system relied on analog radio transmission, interference could still occur if multiple wireless systems operated nearby. Sony addressed this by introducing selectable transmission channels, usually labeled CH1 and CH2, allowing the transmitter and receiver to shift to a slightly different carrier frequency.

Wireless playback also involved compromises. The RF link slightly reduced the available frequency response compared with wired listening, and both the transmitter and receiver required their own power supply. Even so, the concept proved reliable enough for Sony to continue refining it.

1989 WM-506: Wireless Environmental Monitoring

The WM-506 retained the same RF transmission system but added a built-in microphone with Sony’s “Hot Line” monitoring function. This allowed the listener to hear surrounding sounds through the headphones without removing them.

Once the headphone cable disappeared, listening became more isolated. Sony solved this by mixing microphone input into the wireless signal so outside sounds could still be heard through the headphones.

1989 WM-F606: Radio Through the Receiver

The WM-F606 expanded the concept by adding an AM/FM tuner. Much of the radio interface moved to the receiver unit rather than the Walkman itself.

That small design decision reshaped the system architecture. The receiver was no longer just capturing audio. It had quietly become part of the control hardware.

1990 WM-805: The LCD Receiver

The WM-805 pushed the receiver concept further. Its wireless module included an LCD display and full remote control capability. Playback information could be viewed directly on the receiver while the Walkman remained in a pocket or bag.

Sony also introduced pairing codes to prevent nearby wireless Walkmans from connecting to the wrong receiver in crowded environments.

Released alongside the WM-507, the WM-F507 added an FM tuner to the same wireless architecture. The receiver handled radio tuning and playback control while the Walkman remained primarily a cassette transport and transmitter.

At this point the system had effectively become modular: the cassette unit transmitted audio while the receiver handled listening and control.

1991 WM-WX88: Wireless Listening for Outdoor Use

The early 1990s marked a shift in Sony’s approach. The WM-WX88 launched the WX series and pushed the wireless concept toward outdoor listening.

The system paired the Walkman with a splash-resistant wireless receiver and earphones intended for active use. The WM-WX808 refined the WX architecture by allowing playback to be started directly from the receiver unit.

By this point the wireless Walkman had evolved into a small system. Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T700 Review

Sony released the DSC-T700 near the high point of the compact digital camera market. The camera paired its CCD sensor with a Zeiss lens offering a 4× optical zoom range, while Optical SteadyShot stabilization helped reduce blur from camera movement.

The model belongs to Sony’s slim Cyber-shot T-series, known for metal bodies and sliding lens covers that move aside when the camera powers on. The brushed aluminum exterior gives the camera a dense, cool feel compared with the lightweight plastic bodies common in many compact cameras of the period.

The 3.5-inch touchscreen LCD was unusually large for a compact camera when the T700 launched. It covers almost the entire rear panel and allows photos to be browsed directly on the device through an album-style interface.

Another unusual feature is the 4 GB of built-in internal memory. At the time most compact cameras relied entirely on removable cards. Sony promoted the internal storage as a way to carry thousands of photos without inserting a card, though the camera also accepts Memory Stick Duo cards for additional space.

Before that moment, home listening revolved around vinyl records and cassette tapes. Both were analog systems in which sound existed as physical variations in grooves or magnetic coatings. Surface noise, distortion, and gradual wear were accepted parts of playback. The compact disc approached music from a different direction. Instead of storing sound as a physical waveform, it stored digital information encoded on a reflective optical disc. A semiconductor laser scanned the disc and translated that information back into audio.

For the first time, music playback no longer relied on physical contact between the medium and the player. The CDP-101 turned that principle into a working home audio system, replacing the stylus and tape head with a laser and transforming the compact disc from an experimental technology into a practical consumer format.

The story of the first CD player begins with a collaboration between Sony and Philips during the late 1970s. Philips had been researching optical disc technology through projects led by engineer Lou Ottens, who had previously overseen the creation of the compact cassette. At the same time, Sony engineers were experimenting with digital recording systems intended for professional music production.

The two efforts came together when Philips invited Sony chairman Norio Ohga to Eindhoven to examine an early optical audio prototype. Ohga’s background was unusual for a corporate executive. Before joining Sony he had trained as a classical conductor, and that musical training later shaped many of Sony’s decisions in digital audio engineering. When he saw Philips’ prototype optical disc system, he immediately recognized its potential for high-fidelity music reproduction.

Ohga was not the only prominent figure supporting the technology. His close friend, the celebrated conductor Herbert von Karajan, became one of the earliest public champions of the compact disc. At a 1981 press conference in Salzburg demonstrating the emerging format, Karajan famously declared that compared to the digital sound of the compact disc, “all else is gaslight,” a statement that captured both the excitement and the prestige surrounding the technology’s arrival.

Both companies brought different strengths to the project. Philips had extensive experience with optical disc mechanics and laser optics, while Sony had already developed sophisticated digital audio technology used in recording studios. By 1979 the companies formally partnered to create a new digital audio format that later became known as the Compact Disc.

Much of the engineering on Sony’s side was led by Toshitada Doi, who had previously developed the PCM-1600 digital mastering system. At Philips, engineer Kees Schouhamer Immink played a central role in finalizing the Eight-to-Fourteen Modulation coding method and the CIRC error-correction system that made reliable consumer playback possible.

Engineers from both companies began defining the technical structure of the system. The format ultimately adopted sixteen-bit digital audio resolution, a specification strongly promoted by Sony. The sampling rate was set at 44.1 kHz so that the system could remain compatible with the digital mastering equipment already used in studios. That rate was tied directly to Sony’s PCM digital recording systems, which stored audio on U-matic video tape recorders. The 44.1 kHz sampling structure fit neatly within the timing constraints of both NTSC and PAL video signals used by those machines. Engineers also developed a method known as Eight-to-Fourteen Modulation to ensure that digital information could be read reliably from the disc surface, while a complex error-correction system called CIRC allowed the player to reconstruct damaged or missing audio data during playback.

One discussion during development later became famous. Sony chairman Norio Ohga argued that the new format should be capable of holding an entire symphonic performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony without interruption. To meet that goal, engineers expanded the capacity of the disc to roughly seventy-four minutes, a length that later became the standard duration of the compact disc.

These specifications were documented in 1980 in the technical standard known as the Red Book. The finished format used a twelve-centimeter optical disc capable of storing seventy-four minutes of stereo digital audio. Prototype players already existed, and Philips demonstrated an experimental optical audio player in 1979 under the nickname Pinkeltje. However, prototypes alone could not establish a consumer format. The compact disc required an entire ecosystem that included digital mastering systems, manufacturing plants, music distribution, and reliable playback hardware for the home.

Sony entered the compact disc project with an advantage that few companies possessed. During the late 1970s Sony had introduced the PCM-1600 digital audio mastering system, a professional recorder that stored sixteen-bit digital audio on U-matic video tapes. Recording studios used the system to create digital master recordings years before compact discs reached consumers.

Those digital tapes later became the source material for early compact discs. When Sony and Philips finalized the compact disc standard, Sony already had the technical experience required to decode that digital information in a consumer playback device. The CDP-101 therefore represented the final link in a chain that began in recording studios and ended in the living room.

The Sony CDP-101 was designed to translate the compact disc specification into a reliable home audio component. Unlike record players or cassette decks, the CDP-101 used a semiconductor laser to read microscopic pits embedded in the reflective surface of an optical disc. These pits represented encoded digital information, and the player had to read the signal, decode it, correct errors, and convert the data into analog sound in real time.

To accomplish this, Sony engineers integrated several complex systems into the player. A precision infrared semiconductor laser pickup read the pits on the disc surface. Digital processors decoded the Eight-to-Fourteen Modulation signal used to encode the data. Dedicated circuitry handled CIRC error correction so that scratches or small defects would not interrupt playback. Finally, a sixteen-bit digital-to-analog converter transformed the digital data stream into the analog electrical signal that powered speakers. The CDP-101 used a single converter that rapidly alternated between the left and right audio channels, a technique known as time multiplexing. This approach simplified the circuitry but introduced a tiny delay of roughly eleven microseconds between channels. The difference was far below the threshold of human hearing, although some early audiophile critics pointed to it as evidence that digital audio still had imperfections.

Because the player used a conventional non-oversampling DAC, it also relied on a very steep analog reconstruction filter to remove ultrasonic frequencies above the audible range. These “brick-wall” filters introduced phase shifts near the top of the audio band, which contributed to early criticism that some first-generation CD players sounded overly sharp compared with vinyl.

The physical design of the player also differed from traditional stereo equipment. Instead of a platter and tonearm, the CDP-101 used a front-loading tray, a configuration that soon became the standard layout for CD players throughout the industry. Early demonstration prototypes briefly experimented with vertical disc loading so that the label remained visible during playback, but Sony ultimately adopted the horizontal tray mechanism for production.

The front panel included a vacuum fluorescent display that showed track numbers and playback time. In the early 1980s the glowing display contributed to the futuristic appearance of the player.

Sony also introduced several features that helped define the CD listening experience. Users could skip directly between tracks using the Automatic Music Sensor system, view precise playback times on the digital display, and control the machine remotely using an infrared controller. In the early 1980s wireless infrared remotes were still rare in home audio equipment, making this feature a surprising convenience for the time. Because remote control technology was new for hi-fi equipment, Sony added an audible confirmation tone that produced a short electronic beep whenever a command was received, and a switch on the rear panel allowed the user to disable the sound if desired. Pressing the open button and watching the motorized tray glide smoothly outward with a mechanical whir felt strikingly futuristic compared with the manual handling of vinyl records.

Compared with the mechanical systems used in turntables and cassette decks, the CDP-101 handled music primarily through electronic processing, marking the moment when music in the home became digital data. The player’s dense collection of early digital integrated circuits generated substantial heat, which is why the CDP-101 included a large finned heatsink mounted on its rear panel. Despite the durability of the discs themselves, the early optical tracking mechanisms were sensitive to vibration, and heavy footsteps or a knock on the audio rack could cause the player to momentarily lose its place and skip.

The Sony CDP-101 was introduced on October 1, 1982 in Japan with a launch price of 168,000 yen. The model name also carried a small internal joke. Nobuyuki Idei, who led Sony’s audio division at the time, chose “101” because in binary it equals five. He considered the machine a solid “middle-class” product on a scale from one to ten rather than an ultimate flagship. The player supported the Compact Disc Digital Audio format, reproducing sound at sixteen-bit resolution with a sampling rate of 44.1 kHz. Sony specified a frequency response from five hertz to twenty kilohertz with extremely low distortion and a dynamic range exceeding ninety decibels. Total harmonic distortion measured roughly 0.004 percent at one kilohertz, and the standard line output delivered approximately 2 volts RMS. The integrated headphone amplifier produced around 28 milliwatts into 32-ohm headphones.

The player measured approximately 350 millimeters wide, 105 millimeters high, and 325 millimeters deep, with a power consumption of roughly 23 to 30 watts during operation. It weighed about 7.6 kilograms and used Sony’s early CX-series sixteen-bit digital-to-analog converter integrated circuits.

At launch the price translated to roughly 730 U.S. dollars, placing the CDP-101 firmly in the high-end segment of the home audio market and equivalent to well over two thousand dollars today.

The CDP-101 appeared together with the first commercial catalog of compact discs. On October 1, 1982, Sony and CBS/Sony released roughly fifty CD titles that included classical recordings, Japanese pop albums, jazz releases, and international rock music.

To manufacture these discs, CBS/Sony had already opened a compact disc production facility in Shizuoka Prefecture. The factory became one of the earliest optical disc manufacturing plants in the world. Before discs could be pressed, the music itself had to be converted into digital form.

Early compact discs were mastered using Sony’s PCM-1600 digital recording system. Digital audio was recorded onto U-matic video tapes, which served as the master source for CD production. From those tapes engineers created a glass master, which was then used to stamp microscopic pits into polycarbonate discs during manufacturing.

During the final months before launch engineers encountered a production challenge. Early discs warped slightly during manufacturing, which interfered with laser tracking. The issue was resolved by switching to polycarbonate plastic, the material that later became the universal standard used for compact discs.

By launch day Sony had aligned the essential elements required for the format to succeed. The playback device existed, a catalog of albums was available, and factories were capable of manufacturing discs at scale. At that point the compact disc moved from laboratory research into commercial reality.

In line with the Sony-Philips partnership agreement, the compact disc format expanded internationally the following year. In March 1983 the CDP-101 reached the United States and Europe with a retail price around $900 to $1,000. Philips introduced its own CD100 player in Western markets at roughly the same time. Early catalogs outside Japan were far smaller than the initial Japanese release of about fifty titles, which contributed to a slower adoption of the format in Western markets.

One of the most common questions about compact disc history concerns the first CD release. Many sources point to Billy Joel’s 52nd Street. The album carried catalog number 35DP-1, placing it first in CBS/Sony’s early compact disc catalog series. Sony also used the album in promotional photography for the CDP-101 player, which helped establish its reputation as the “first CD.”

The historical record is more complicated. Compact discs did not debut with a single album. The format launched in Japan on October 1, 1982, the same day the Sony CDP-101 went on sale, with a catalog of roughly fifty titles prepared for the new format.

One of those releases was Eiichi Otaki’s A Long Vacation (35DH-1), often cited as one of the earliest compact discs issued by a Japanese artist.

Disc manufacturing had already begun several weeks earlier. In August 1982, engineers at the PolyGram pressing plant in Langenhagen, West Germany, began producing compact discs while validating the new optical replication process. One of the discs created during these early runs was ABBA’s album The Visitors, frequently cited among the first compact discs manufactured.

At the same time, CBS/Sony’s plant in Shizuoka, Japan, was pressing discs in preparation for the October launch. By the time the CDP-101 reached stores, production lines in both Europe and Japan had already produced inventory for the first catalog.

Because of this overlap, the idea of a single “first compact disc” is misleading. Albums such as The Visitors, 52nd Street, and A Long Vacation appear in the story because they represent different milestones in the early history of the format.

Although Sony introduced the first commercial CD player, the technology spread quickly. Philips, Sony’s partner in developing the compact disc format, released the Philips CD100 in Europe in 1983. Philips approached digital-to-analog conversion differently from Sony, using pairs of fourteen-bit converters with oversampling techniques rather than a single sixteen-bit design. Although Sony’s CDP-101 used a front-loading tray, early CD players experimented with several designs. Philips’ CD100 used a top-loading lid similar to a turntable, while some manufacturers briefly sold vertical-loading players in which the disc stood upright behind a transparent door. Sony’s tray mechanism ultimately became the dominant design because it allowed other stereo components to be stacked on top of the player.

Other manufacturers soon entered the market, including Pioneer, Toshiba, Hitachi, Sharp, Marantz, and Akai. Within a few years CD players began appearing in stereo systems around the world as the compact disc format gained momentum.

Early critical reactions to compact disc playback were mixed. Some reviewers praised the format’s clarity and dynamic range. In one early evaluation, Stereophile founder J. Gordon Holt described certain orchestral recordings played through early CD equipment as “the most realistic reproduction of an orchestra I have heard in my home in 20-odd years.”

Other listeners, however, felt that early digital recordings sounded brittle or clinical compared with vinyl records. Critics often blamed the steep analog filtering used in first-generation players as well as the lack of oversampling. Philips’ CD100 and Sony’s CDP-101 therefore represented two distinct engineering philosophies during the early years of digital audio, and debates between analog and digital enthusiasts quickly became one of the defining arguments of 1980s hi-fi culture.

The CDP-101 demonstrated digital audio in the home, but its high price kept it in the upper tier of the audio market. Sony soon pursued a smaller and more accessible player.

In 1984 the company released the Sony D-50 Discman, the first portable CD player. Engineers condensed the electronics of a full CD player into a device only slightly larger than the disc itself. Sony chairman Akio Morita insisted the machine be priced below fifty thousand yen, even if the company initially lost money on each unit. Morita believed that once people experienced compact disc sound quality for themselves, the format would spread rapidly.

A year later Dire Straits’ Brothers in Arms demonstrated the commercial power of the new format. Released in 1985 and recorded entirely in digital form, the album became one of the first to sell more than a million copies on compact disc.

Once the player, the discs, and the manufacturing infrastructure were in place, the compact disc spread rapidly through the music industry. Within a decade CDs replaced vinyl records and cassette tapes as the dominant music format. Early marketing emphasized durability and promoted the slogan “Perfect Sound Forever,” a phrase used by Sony and Philips to describe the promise of digital audio.

Some early discs were mastered using a technique called pre-emphasis, which boosted high frequencies to reduce noise and relied on a matching de-emphasis circuit inside the player to restore the correct tonal balance during playback. If the mastering or playback chain was imperfect, the result could sound unusually bright, contributing to the first debates between analog enthusiasts and digital adopters.

The CDP-101 remained in production until the mid-1980s. Like many first-generation digital players, it relied on early optical pickup assemblies and controller chips that later designs improved significantly. Surviving working units have therefore become sought-after collectors’ items among vintage audio enthusiasts.

What appeared in 1982 as a single hi-fi component was actually the visible beginning of something much larger. The disc introduced alongside it proved so well defined that nearly fifty years later it still looks essentially the same: twelve centimeters across, a small hole in the center, microscopic pits carrying digital sound. From factories in Japan and Europe the design spread across the world, reproduced hundreds of billions of times and played in hundreds of millions of machines around the world. Few media inventions of the twentieth century fixed their physical form so early and endured at that scale. The CDP-101 was where that object first entered everyday life.

There is some truth to that. Sony Semiconductor Solutions is the largest manufacturer of image sensors in the world. But the mirrorless transition in the late 2010s followed a more specific pattern. Between 2018 and the early 2020s several manufacturers built their first mirrorless systems around the same generation of Sony technology. At the center of that period sat the Sony IMX410.

The timing explains why it became so widely used.
